Sometimes Animals Are Better Than People

Her Da always told Saki how when her crystal was still growing, her Mother, Hana, found a small bird egg abandoned on the ground. Hana was always very adept at magic concerning living things, and imbued the egg with enough magic to keep it alive and safe. The little egg was placed among the nest of flowers and foliage on Saki's pedestal, and when Saki's crystal broke, so did the egg.

Toto is a small male eastern bluebird, and he and Saki have had a special bond since they were both born. They've figured out how to communicate with each other, and Saki is pretty sure Toto has some sort of magic going on- he definitely seems smarter than most birds, and his lifespan has long surpassed that of the average eastern bluebird.

Toto is her best friend and closest companion by far- basically siblings. Saki likes to think of him as the 'brains to her brawn,' if you will (ignoring the fact that Saki has little physical brawn to speak of. It's the vibes of it all). He's a swift flier and has a good eye for scouting and stealth, as well as sharp talons if he needs to claw some eyes out for daring to hurt his girl.

Saki dreams of flying alongside Toto sometimes, great feathered wings on her back. She's never been able to muster up enough magic to successfully make them real, though, even with Toto's guidance.
